5 Things Brands Should NOT Do on Social Media

You know what they say, becoming a successful brand is easy, maintaining your status and business model is hard. This is especially true on social media because 96% of the people that discuss brands online do not follow those brands’ owned profiles. In 2018, if you are not on social media, your brand does not exist. While some may consider this faulty logic because they get their business via referral, but, the truth of the matter is that their audience is already on social media. With over 2.6 billion users, you can easily find ten people you know that is one at least one social media platform. If you are one of those brands that does not know what to do on social media, here are five things you shouldn't be doing.

Creating Too Many Promo Posts

While it might seem like a smart idea from a branding perspective, making five to six posts a day about just your business is not a great way to get new customers. You would've gotten away with this back in 2009, but ever since Facebook has gone public, the algorithm's gotten heavier and more complicated. This will make it harder for you to create more promo posts. Try creating posts that will get some engagement instead. I like using quotes with the hashtag #mondaymotivation or a post about an upcoming event in the neighborhood or a holiday that's coming up. These posts will get the engagement and the followers you want.

Posting Irrelevant Information

If you are a holistic business and you are posting about your baby's first steps, you are not going to get the numbers you want. Instead you will see your follower rate decrease because you are not posting what your followers are looking for. Try researching what your followers are looking for, do some demographic market research on your target audience and check out what they are interested in. Then create your posts around those topics. This will ensure a relevant follower base and the engagement you want.

Following Unrelated Brands

One big way to fail on social media is to follow brands that do not fit your specific niche or field in what your brand does. If you are a yoga studio that focuses on baby boomers, you wouldn't want to end your Instagram post with #yolo or have a gif of yourself doing the floss right? Which is why you have to use the same standards when you follow people. If you want to get found on social media, who you follow and the posts you make is what is going to make people click that follow button, so follow brands carefully!

Posting Once a Week (or Not at All)

Think about it, how often do you go on social media looking for a product that you saw in a store, but you couldn't find them? More than likely you will give up the search and look for a competitor. This is what happens when you are not posting often or consistently on social media. Your product or your service might be good, but it doesn't mean anything if you aren't present on social media. Try to post at least three times a week with relevant and engaging content (videos work best, but try mixing it with graphics as well).

Not Engaging with Your Followers

If we learned anything from the infamous United Airlines scandal, it's that you can't ignore your customers on social media. I talk about how important customer service on social media is in another post, however if you paid enough attention to the online atmosphere this year you will notice that more and more people are getting vocal on social media. If you are not paying attention to your customers then you will lose them. Period. Try getting bots (like Manychat) to answer customer messages so you can let them know you are not ignoring them and will get back to your messages as soon as you can.
