How to Use Snapchat

If you know what Snapchat is, you are probably between the ages of 15-29, or the millennial/gen z generation. If you don't know what it is, then you, my friend, are not hip (gosh do people even say that anymore? I feel old). Snapchat is one of those apps, that came up along with Vine (RIP), which was a short video capturing app that also captured items in the moment. The one thing that set Snapchat apart from the rest of the social media competition, was their use of these "in the moment" videos, pictures, and how the content users put up was available for only 24 hours to friends or even private message.

So, How Do I Use It?

Well first you need a smartphone to download the app and create an account. Once you create the account, you have the option of using BitMoji (avatar creator) and play around with it while you are in the app. You can take in the moment videos, for example, I like to record videos of my walks to and from the gym. You can take pictures of an experience, like a concert, a safari, the behind the scenes of your small business. After that you can choose to send this content (or story) to a select few or to the public.

How Is This Useful?

If your businesses focus on millennials or gen z, then you are in luck! Snapchat is incredibly popular amongst that age group, behind Instagram, which owns 75% of the gen z market. Teens are far more likely to use an app where they aren't spied on by parents, grandparents, teachers or other elders. In fact, the private messaging feature on Instagram and Snapchat is one of the most used features amongst gen z and millennials. These stats are incredibly useful for any small business focuses on youth.

How Do I Get Started?

Starting from scratch can be difficult, but you can definitely build a following from paying some gen z influencers to follow your social media accounts, if you need to build a following fast that is. It's always good to start organic, so getting people to follow your page via contest or ad is a tried and true strategy, however word of mouth always works best. "Hey X, can you see if my video is working right? I am trying this new video thing on Snapchat and I need to see if the filters are working." (The filters which you can swipe right or left on after you take a picture). If you have cool content, say a character or mascot for your videos, or a picture of your process behind your product or service, that is very shareable. You can gain a lot of followers this way.
