Facebook Just Deleted 1B Accounts: What Does it Mean to You?

It's not just the biggest social media site but it's also one of the biggest sites on the internet. Facebook proudly announced a year ago that they have reached over two billion users, yes that's right, billion with a b, on their platform. That is almost as big as the population of China and India combined! However due to the recent data crisis Facebook went through in Q1, they've deleted 548 million accounts in Q1 of 2018, which is down from 694 million in Q4 of 2017. Either way, it's still a lot of fake accounts being made and a lot to delete.

Fake News to Fake Accounts

While Facebook has come under a lot of scrutiny recently in how fake news played a big role in the recent presidential election, they are doing their part to make sure that fake accounts do not make it pass creation. While most are just bots, some are accounts that have been criticized to spew hate speech, porn, violence, and Russian interference. However, in their 89 page report Facebook states 3-4% fake accounts are still active on their site. Which essentially means that 66-88 million accounts have gotten away with the wrath of Facebook scrutiny.

What Does This Mean to You?

As a small business, this news should concern you a little bit because Facebook pages have gotten taken down as well, but luckily most businesses were able to get their pages back. This recent purge wasn't enough to get those all hateful accounts off of Facebook and if you are suffering from hate speech, bad reviews, or even fake news on your page chances are it'll get purged. However, there is still that small percentage that it won't. People forget all the time that Facebook has become as big of a brand as Yahoo! or Amazon now and for people to think that data will get erased on the internet instantaneously, is ridiculous. Even with all the tools, Facebook has, fake accounts will take more than six months to delete, but that is not to say more of them will be made in place of those deleted.
